TBN analyzes are generally used as an indicator of lubricating capacity for how much additive is left to neutralize acids. This value is particularly useful when oil change intervals are desired to be extended.
When preparing diesel engine oils, they are often formulated with a higher TBN value to protect against acid formation caused by incomplete combustion of the fuel. The TBN value of unused oil is generally between 7-10 for gasoline engines and 10-14 for diesel engines. When these values drop to a point where the oil is no longer able to neutralize acids, for example about 3, it is decided that it is time to change the oil.
The total base number (TBN) often drops due to oil oxidation and poor quality fuel with high sulfur levels. Essentially, oil oxidation occurs naturally over time and occurs when the oil change interval is long. This decrease is also related to operating temperatures. Oils exposed to higher operating temperatures and engine overheating oxidize more quickly. Poor quality fuel with higher sulfur content also lowers the TBN.
