EN 13697 Chemical Disinfectants and Antiseptics - Evaluation of the Bactericidal or Fungicide Efficacy of Chemical Disinfectants Used in Food, Industrial, Domestic and Institutional Fields

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 13697 testing. The purpose of the EN 13697 method is to determine the bactericidal, fungicidal and even yeasticidal activity exhibited by chemical disinfectants or antiseptics for food, industrial, domestic and institutional applications.

EN 13697 Chemical Disinfectants and Antiseptics - Evaluation of the Bactericidal or Fungicide Efficacy of Chemical Disinfectants Used in Food, Industrial, Domestic and Institutional Fields

This antimicrobial test is designed for products that form a homogeneous and stable solution (when diluted with hard water or with water for RTU products) and is designed for non-porous surfaces. Standard test conditions are to simulate real conditions for product application in commercial use. Variables such as contact time(s), temperature or surface organisms are intended to reflect those commonly encountered in practical conditions.

In addition, the EN 13697 method allows the ingress of interfering substances that can affect the disinfectant effect.

The EN 13697 antimicrobial test is applicable to the determination of bactericidal activity on non-porous surfaces without mechanical action, yeasticidal activity on non-porous surfaces without mechanical action, and fungicidal activity on non-porous surfaces without mechanical action. Each of these application areas includes various types of testing.

For bactericides:

  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Escherichia coli
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa

For fungicides and fungicides:

  • Candida albicans
  • Aspergillus brasiliensis

A suspension of bacteria or fungi is inoculated and dried on the surface of a stainless steel cup. The product is then applied to the surface of the dried film as directed by the label and held at a constant temperature for a specified period of time. The surface is then transferred to a pre-approved medium to neutralize the disinfectant and proceed with a recovered quantitative determination of surviving organisms.
