EN 1484 Water Analysis - Determination of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC)

The EN 1484 standard is one of the worldwide standards for water monitoring using combustion oxidation for the determination of total carbon, total organic carbon and total inorganic carbon in various source waters. Standardization of water monitoring significantly improves water quality in drinking water, groundwater, surface water, seawater applications and wastewater monitoring.

Due to the diversity of organic matter that can occur in spring water, strong oxidation is required to achieve maximum CO recovery. According to EN 1484, historical data shows that multiple oxidation techniques can potentially achieve the desired recovery.

Copper phthalocyanine-tetrasulfonic acid, Model 1484 is used to determine the recovery of tetrasodium salt as a test material for EN 1080 compliance. Analyzing samples by combustion oxidation is a very comprehensive process that results in consistently high sample recoveries.

Based on the theoretical molecular weight of the tetrasodium salt as specified in EN 1484, the theoretical percentage of carbon is 39.049%; A 0.256 ppm C solution can be prepared using 100 g/L tetrasodium salt. However, the Certificate of Analysis (COA) for the copper reagent lot number states that the measured carbon percentage is 53,48%. The acceptable carbon range for this product is 21,4–56,6% (as specified by the supplier). Using the percent carbon value measured from the COA, 100 g/L copper reagent is used to prepare a 0.187 ppm solution of C.
