EN 15326 Bitumen and Bituminous Binders - Density and Specific Gravity Measurement - Pycnometer Method with Capillary Stopper

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN 15326 testing. This European standard specifies a procedure for determining the specific gravity and density of bituminous binders at (25,0 ± 0,2)°C using the pycnometer method with capillary stopper. Emulsions are outside the scope of this method.

This method can also be used for other hydrocarbon binders, bituminous binders obtained from other sources; For bituminous binders obtained from asphalt or after hardening and containing filler. However, a lower sensitivity should be expected.

The pycnometer method will be used as the reference method in determining the specific gravity and density of bituminous binders.

The masses of equal volumes of bitumen sample and test liquid are compared. When the pycnometer is placed in a bath at the test temperature, equal volumes are provided by filling to overflow until thermal equilibrium is reached (approximately 30 minutes).

The calibrated pycnometer is filled to approximately three-quarters of its capacity with the bituminous binder to be tested and weighed with the stopper. The pycnometer is filled with test liquid and weighed again. Specific gravity and density will be calculated from different masses.

Consisting of a conical or cylindrical vessel, the glass is carefully ground to obtain a precisely fitting glass stopper. The capacity of the plugged pycnometer will be (25 ± 2) cm³ and its weight will not be more than 40 grams. The wide-mouth (Hubbard) form of the pycnometer can be used as detailed in ISO 3507. If larger samples are available, a larger Hubard pycnometer with a capacity of 3507 ml can be used, also detailed in ISO 50; masses must be determined with the same accuracy.
