ISO 3451-2 Plastics - Determination of Ash - Part 2: Standard Test for Poly(Alkylene Terephthalate) Materials

This part of ISO 3451 covers methods for the determination of ash of both filled and unfilled poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(butylene terephthalate) and copolymers of the two. The general procedures given in ISO 3451-1 are followed. For unfilled materials, method A or method C of ISO 3451-1 is used.

Method A of ISO 3451-1 is used for filled and glass fiber reinforced materials. For glass fiber filled materials containing flame retardant, antimony trioxide or other volatilizing additives, for example the pigment zinc sulfide, a modification is included to remove them as volatile bromine components.

If the material contains metal halides or metals (especially in the presence of halogenated material) that tend to evaporate during the combustion of organic matter, calcination after sulfation can be applied (ISO 3451-1, method C). This procedure is accomplished by heating the organic matter together with concentrated sulfuric acid to a temperature at which evaporation and subsequent combustion of the organic matter occurs, and finally treating the residue at an elevated temperature until constant mass is reached.

Some additives, such as zinc sulfide, are also completely evaporated into bromides by burning the organic matter in contact with decabromobiphenyl (DBB). Information on additives in the material and the potential for evaporation during combustion in contact with DBB should be requested from the supplier or obtained by testing on a pure chemical.
