OECD 308 is a biodegradation method for chemicals in aquatic sedimentary environment. Chemicals can be applied to such environments by direct application, runoff, drainage, waste disposal, etc. can enter with. This method consists of aerobic and anaerobic tests to best simulate common aquatic sediment conditions.
The surface sediment layer can be aerobic or anaerobic, whereas the deeper sediment is usually anaerobic. Other condition specifications can be made in consultation with the laboratory. Although this method was performed in an artificial laboratory system, the results allow estimation of the rate of conversion of the test substance and the rate of formation and reduction of conversion products under field conditions.
Sediment samples in water are set up in both aerobic and anaerobic test systems and treated with the test substance. The test systems are then incubated in the dark under controlled laboratory conditions (constant temperature, etc.). At several time points, sediment samples are taken and analyzed for the test substance and any subsequent transformation products that may have formed. The duration of the method usually does not exceed 100 days.
Before applying OECD 308, information on the solubility of the test substance in water (OECD 105), solubility in organic solvents, vapor pressure, n-octanol/water partition coefficient (OECD 117), adsorption coefficient (OECD 121), hydrolysis should be available. Other useful information includes toxicity to microorganisms, ready or natural biodegradability, and aerobic and anaerobic conversion in soil.
