EN ISO 14184-1 Textile - Determination of Formaldehyde - Part 1: Free and Hydrolyzed Formaldehyde (Water Removal Method)

The EN ISO 14184-1 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a method for determining the amount of free formaldehyde and formaldehyde that is partially extracted by hydrolysis by means of a water extraction method. The method is applicable to testing textile samples of any shape.

The procedure is designed for use in the range of free and hydrolyzed formaldehyde between 16 mg/kg and 3.500 mg/kg on fabric when determined by this method. The lower limit is 16 mg/kg. Below this limit, the result is reported as "undetectable".

This part of ISO 14184 requires the use of substances or procedures that could be harmful to health if adequate precautions are not taken. It expresses only technical compliance and does not relieve the user from legal obligations regarding health and safety at any stage. In the drafting of this part of ISO 14184, it was assumed that the implementation of its provisions is entrusted to suitably qualified and experienced persons.

EN ISO 14184-1 Test Practice

Formaldehyde is extracted from a textile sample with water at 40 °C. The amount of formaldehyde is then determined colorimetrically.

Dissolve 150 g of ammonium acetate in approximately 800 ml of water, add 3 ml of glacial acetic acid and 2 ml of acetylacetone, transfer to a 1000 ml measuring flask and make up to the mark with water. It is stored in a brown bottle.
