This method describes a procedure for extracting non-volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds from solids such as soil, sludge and waste. The ultrasonic treatment ensures close contact of the sample matrix with the extraction solvent.
This method is divided into two procedures based on the expected concentration of organic compounds. The low concentration procedure is for individual organic components expected to be less than or equal to 20 mg/kg and uses a larger sample size and three batch extractions (lower concentrations are more difficult to extract).
The medium/high concentration procedure is for individual organic components expected to be higher than 20 mg/kg and uses the smaller sample and a single extraction.
Due to the limited contact time between the solvent and the sample, ultrasonic extraction may not be as rigorous as other extraction methods for soils/solids. It is therefore very important to clearly follow the method (including the manufacturer's instructions) to achieve maximum extraction efficiency.
This method identifies at least three extraction solvent systems that can be used for different groups of analytes. Other solvent systems may be used, provided adequate performance can be demonstrated for the analytes involved. The choice of extraction solvent will depend on the analytes of interest and no single solvent is universally valid for all analyte groups.
