Method 8082A is used to determine the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as Aroclors or as individual PCB congeners in extracts from solid, tissue and aqueous matrices using open tube, capillary columns with electron capture detector (ECD) or electrolytic conductivity detector.
The target compounds contain seven arochlorine and 19 individual PCB congeners. These target compounds can be determined with a single or double column assay system.
Seven arochlorines and 19 individual PCB congeners have been tested with this method, and the method may be suitable for additional congeners and Arochlors. The method can also be applied to other matrices such as oils and wipe samples if appropriate sample extraction procedures are used.
Parasites co-extracted from samples will vary significantly from matrix to matrix. General cleaning techniques are cited or provided as part of this method, but unique samples may require additional cleaning approaches to achieve desired degrees of separation and quantification.
Sources of interference in this method include one-component chlorinated pesticides (including DDT, DDE, DDD), chlorinated aromatics (eg, chlorinated benzenes), phthalates, and compounds to which the detector responds, such as sulfur (S8). Any rekalictrant compound that contains an electronegative element and elutes in the chromatographic window is a potential interferer.
