Over its numerous revisions, it has become the standard for the evaluation of liquid and dilutable liquid disinfectants for hard surfaces.

Usage The dilution method is accomplished by briefly dipping the stainless steel carriers into bacteria, treating them with disinfectant, and finally placing the carriers in growth water to determine if there are still surviving bacteria. This makes the method a qualitative method, meaning that the results are determined by whether bacteria are growing rather than counting the bacteria.

One of the most recent revisions of the method, the result of several years of work by industry members and the EPA, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is to lower the performance standard and make the test pass/fail detection more reliable. This also had the advantage of making it easier to pass the test to the liking of disinfectant developers.
