This standard specifies a test method and minimum requirements for the bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectant products intended for use in aqueous systems against Legionella pneumophila, which when diluted with buffered ferrous hard water or hard water forms a homogeneous, physically stable preparation.
Where Legionella pneumophila poses a risk to human health, this method is suitable for water used in cooling towers and general purpose waters such as spas, pools, showers and other uses. The method is not suitable for electrochemical disinfection.
This standard applies to products used as single-application shock therapy to kill Legionella pneumophila. Not suitable for the evaluation of products that are continuously dosed into water systems to control the growth of Legionella pneumophila.
The described method aims to determine the efficacy of commercial formulations or active ingredients under the conditions in which they are used. This method does not take into account the fact that Legionella pneumophila is usually found on amoeba or biofilm cells and therefore the effectiveness of a product against bacteria can be reduced.
If the product complies with the requirements of this standard, it may be considered a bactericide against Legionella pneumophila, but it should not be concluded that the product is acceptable for a particular field of application without considering other relevant factors such as pH, water.
