EN 14582 Waste Characterization - Halogen and Sulfur Content - Oxygen Combustion in Closed Systems and Determination Methods

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 14582 testing. This standard covers a combustion method for the determination of halogen and sulfur content in materials by combustion in an oxygen-containing closed system (calorimetric bomb) and the subsequent analysis of the combustion product using different analytical techniques.

EN 14582 Waste Characterization - Halogen and Sulfur Content - Oxygen Combustion in Closed Systems and Determination Methods

This method is applicable to solid, pasty and liquid samples containing more than 0,025 g/kg halogen or 0,025 g/kg sulfur content. The detection limit depends on the element, the matrix and the detection technique used. The insoluble halides and sulfate present in the sample or produced during the combustion step cannot be precisely determined by these methods.

Sulfur and halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine) can be found in materials in various forms. During the combustion of these materials, corrosive and harmful compounds may be released. The determination of sulfur and halogens by oxygen combustion can be used to evaluate the suitability of waste for incineration.

Anyone dealing with waste and sludge analysis should be aware of the typical risks of such materials, regardless of the parameter to be determined. Waste and sludge samples may contain hazardous (e.g. toxic, reactive, flammable, infectious) substances that may react biologically or chemically. Therefore, these samples should be handled with special care.

Gases that can be produced by microbiological or chemical activity are potentially flammable and will pressurize sealed containers. Exploding bottles are likely to result in dangerous shrapnel, dust or aerosol. National regulations regarding all hazards associated with this method must be followed.

All reagents must be of at least analytical purity and suitable for their particular purpose. In particular, it should not contain sulfur and halogen.

Reagents refer to chemical compounds used for the preparation of absorption solutions; Not all of these are necessary, depending on the choice of solutions made by the laboratory for the determination of halides and sulfur.
