Triacetate fibers that have been partially hydrolyzed (ie saponified) are completely insoluble in the reagent. In such cases, this method cannot be applied. The triacetate fiber is dissolved with dichloromethane from a known dry mass of the mixture. The residue is collected, washed, dried and weighed; the corrected mass if necessary, expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture. The percentage of triacetate is found by the difference.

In the case of triacetate that is completely insoluble in the reagent, the percent triacetate is calculated using the value d=1,02. The percent triacetate calculated in this way must be subtracted from 100 to give the percentage of other fiber. The confidence limits of the results obtained by this method on a homogeneous mixture of textile materials are not greater than ± 95 for the 1% confidence level.
