ISO 16000-15 Indoor Air - Part 15: Standard Test Method for Sampling Strategy for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 16000-15 testing. ISO 16000-15 specifies the planning of nitrogen dioxide indoor pollution measurements. When it comes to indoor air measurements, careful planning of the sampling and the entire measurement strategy is particularly important because the result of the measurement can have far-reaching implications, for example, in determining the need for remedial action or success.

An improper measurement strategy can lead to misrepresentation of real conditions or worse, erroneous results.

This section of ISO 16000 describes key considerations when working on a sampling strategy for measurements of nitrogen dioxide in indoor air. It is intended to be a link between ISO 16000-1, Indoor air, general aspects of sampling strategy and analytical procedures.

A number of methods are available for measuring nitrogen dioxide in indoor air. In principle, they can be divided into short-term measurement methods and long-term measurement methods. Manual analytical methods are used for short-term measurements, and common samplers are generally used for long-term measurements.

When dispersed samplers are used, the analytical part is broadly similar to that used with manual analytical methods. In addition, continuous monitoring devices, which are usually used for ambient air measurements, can also be used for short or long term measurements. In this case, however, device costs and noise may deter their use indoors. If indicator tubes with a sufficiently low minimum detection limit and good sensitivity are available, a preliminary test of indoor concentrations can be made.

In principle, continuous monitoring devices are suitable for long-term measurements, but due to the problems mentioned above, sampling with common samplers is preferred. This type of enrichment systems work on the principle of diffusion of a substance onto an adsorbent medium. Using dispersed samplers, NO2 concentrations are integrated over a period of time (from several hours to days). Concentration peaks are therefore included in the average value determined over time.
