Determination of Carboxyl Group

Carboxyl groups are a combination of two functional groups attached to a single carbon atom, namely hydroxyl and carbonyl groups.

Determination of Carboxyl Group

The main properties of the carboxyl group can be listed as follows:

  • In the carboxylic acid group, the carbon binds to the highly electronegative oxygen, making the bond polar.
  • A compound containing a carboxyl group has a high melting point, hydrophilic centers and boiling point.
  • The high melting and boiling point is due to the formation of a hydrogen bond in the solid and liquid state. A typical example is fatty acids.
  • Earlier members of carboxylic acids are water-soluble due to hydrogen bonding. Higher members have less solubility due to the increased hydrophobic nature of the carbon chain.

Carboxylic acids are hydrocarbon compounds in which a carboxyl group replaces one or more hydrogen atoms in the hydrocarbon. Methanoic acid, ethanoic acid, propanoic acid, and butanoic acid are the first four carboxylic acids derived from alkanes.

A carboxylic acid is an organic compound containing a carboxyl functional group. They are widely found in nature, they are also produced synthetically.

Carboxylic acids are the most important functional group that offers carbon=oxygen. This type of organic compounds can be obtained in different ways, some carboxylic acids such as citric acid, lactic acid or fumaric acid are produced by fermentation, most of these types of carboxylic acids are used in the food industry.

Carboxylic acid molecules are polar due to the presence of two electronegative oxygen atoms.

The water solubility of compounds containing the carboxyl functional group depends on the size of the compound. The smaller the compound, the higher the resolution. The boiling point of a carboxylic acid is usually higher than that of water. It usually has a strong sour odor. However, its esters have pleasant smells and are therefore used in perfumes.

Fatty acids essential for humans consist of carboxylic acids (for example, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids). Higher fatty acids are used in soap production. The production of soft drinks and many other food products contains various carboxylic acids. In rubber production, acetic acid is used as a coagulant. Carboxylic acids have many applications in the rubber, textile and leather industries. Also, the synthesis of many drugs involves the use of these compounds.
