OECD 221 Testing of Chemicals - Lemna SP. Growth Inhibition Test

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and rapid testing services within the scope of OECD 221 testing. This test guideline is designed to evaluate the toxicity of substances to freshwater aquatic plants of the Lemna (duckweed) genus.

OECD 221 Testing of Chemicals - Lemna SP. Growth Inhibition Test

Exponentially growing plant cultures of the genus Lemna (usually Lemna gibba and Lemna minor) are allowed to grow as monocultures at at least five concentrations of the test substance over a seven-day period. The purpose of the test is to quantify the substance-related effects on vegetative growth during this time period based on evaluations of the selected measurement variables.

The limit test corresponds to a dose level of 100 mg/L. This study includes measuring pH, light intensity, concentrations of test substance, counting the number of leaves, and measuring at least one other variable (total leaf area, dry weight, or fresh weight).

The OECD guidelines for testing chemicals are a collection of approximately 150 of the most relevant internationally recognized test methods used by government, industry and independent laboratories to identify and characterize the potential hazards of chemicals. They are a set of tools for professionals used primarily in regulatory safety testing and then in chemical and chemical product declaration, chemical registration and chemical evaluation.
