Perfluorohexane Sulfonate (PFHxS) Analysis

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is one of a group of chemical compounds known as perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These are also called perfluorochemicals. This group of chemical compounds is used in a wide variety of industrial processes and is found in many consumer products. Perfluorohexane sulfonate is used as a surfactant in stain resistant fabrics, fire extinguishing foams, food packaging and industrial processes.

However, perfluorohexane sulfonate has been detected in private drinking water wells, public drinking water systems and groundwater in various regions with industrial use. Therefore, drinking water is routinely analyzed in these regions. Based on available information, a limit value of 0.047 ppb has been set for perfluorohexane sulfonate in groundwater. In people who drink water below this value, the harmful health effects of this chemical pose little or no risk.

Some studies have found that perfluorohexane sulfonate compounds show high cholesterol, changes in liver function, changes in thyroid hormone levels, and reduced immune response. Due to its widespread use and persistence in the environment, almost everyone has a small amount of perfluorohexane sulfonate in their body, but this does not necessarily indicate a health risk. Exposure to perfluorohexane sulfonate is through the use of consumer products, occupational exposure, eating contaminated food, or drinking contaminated water. Perfluorohexane sulfonate is found in food products, food packaging, packaged foodstuffs, fish caught and eaten by humans, stain and water resistant materials, fire fighting foams, and as paint additives. Ingestion of house dust is also an important source of exposure, especially for infants and young children.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is persistent in the environment, meaning it does not degrade in soil or water under natural conditions. How this chemical acts in the soil depends on the structure and chemistry of the soil. The use of products containing these compounds has been banned or phased out in many places. Yet it is one of the most commonly detected perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances in many environments and in the general population.

Our organization also provides perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) analysis services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
