Dimethyl Formamide Analysis

Dimethyl formamide appears as a water-white liquid with a slight fishy odour. Its flash point is 58 degrees. It is slightly less dense than water. Vapors are heavier than air. It is toxic when inhaled or absorbed through the skin. May irritate eyes.

Dimethyl Formamide Analysis

Dimethyl formamide is a solvent widely used in the synthetic resin and leather industries, and its severity is associated with the duration of occupational exposure. Most people exposed for more than one year have had symptomatic illness, which gradually resolves when they are removed from the workplace.

Dimethyl formamide is completely soluble in water, ether, alcohols, esters, ketones, chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons. It is partially soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. It is a very stable compound in the absence of alkaline or acidic catalytic effects. Dimethyl formamide, which contains 30 ppm of water at 500 degrees, forms 500 ppm of formic acid or dimethyl acetamide products in 1 days in practice. The rate of hydrolysis increases as the time and temperature of water concentration increase. However, even if dimethyl formamide contains water at 50 degrees, the rate of hydrolysis is negligible.

Dimethyl formamide should be stored in a closed and isolated environment and in stainless tanks and steel drums. It is necessary to minimize the inhalation exposure time and to provide suitable ventilation conditions. Rubber and PVC gloves and shoes should be worn during use. In case of leakage, a respirator should be used to avoid exposure to high vapor concentration. If these conditions are met, dimethyl formamide can be stored for 1 year without losing its properties.

The main application areas of dimethyl formamide are: solvent for polymers and resins, catalyst in chemical reactions, gas absorption, solvent for electrolytes, solvent in extractions, raw material and solvent in crystallization.

The strong solvent properties of dimethyl formamide are mostly used in film and fiber production and in adhesive and coating formulations. The use of this compound as a solvent is more economical than cheap solvents as it dissolves more solids at practical working viscosities. It is an effective solvent especially with vinyl polymers, urethanes, epoxy resins, polyacrylonitrile and polyamides. Due to its high purity and selective solvent properties, dimethyl formamide is used, for example, in the extraction or recovery of acetylene and the removal of butadiene from hydrocarbon processes.
