The animal fiber component may consist of hair or wool alone, or any combination of the two. This standard does not apply to products containing nitrogen in dyestuffs or finishes.

The nitrogen content of the mixture is determined and from this and the known or assumed nitrogen contents of the two components, the ratio of each component is calculated.

Allow the solvent to evaporate from the sample in air and remove the last residues in an oven at (105 ± 3)°C. Extract the sample by boiling it in water (50 ml per gram sample) under reflux for 30 minutes. Filter, return the sample to the bottle and repeat the extraction with fresh water.
