OECD 120 Standard Test Method for Solution-Extraction Behavior of Polymers in Water

EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and rapid testing services within the scope of OECD 120 testing. This Test Guideline describes a method using the bottle method with modifications to analyze the solution/extraction behavior of polymers in water.

OECD 120 Standard Test Method for Solution-Extraction Behavior of Polymers in Water

Three samples of 10 g particles of the test substance are weighed into each of the three containers fitted with glass stoppers. Add 1000 ml of water to each container. The containers are tightly capped and then normally shaken at 24°C for a period of 20 hours. The contents of each vessel are then centrifuged or filtered and the polymer concentration in the clear aqueous phase is determined by an appropriate analytical method.

One sample size is sufficient for direct analysis of the aqueous phase. For total polymeric species, analysis of the aqueous phase is possible either by a sufficiently sensitive method or by vacuum evaporation of the aqueous extract to dryness and by spectroscopic or AAS/ICP analysis of the residue. When determining the solution/extraction behavior of the polymer consists of determining only the total organic carbon content (TOC) of the aqueous extract, an additional test should be performed with two different sample sizes in triplicate using ten times smaller polymer samples. A gravimetric determination is performed on the undissolved/unextracted portion of the sample.

The OECD Guidelines for Testing Chemicals is a compilation of approximately 150 of the most relevant internationally accepted test methods used by government, industry and independent laboratories to identify and characterize the potential hazards of chemicals. They are a set of tools for professionals primarily used in regulatory safety testing and subsequent chemical and chemical product notification, chemical registration and chemical evaluation. They can also be used for selection and sequencing of candidate chemicals during the development of new chemicals and products and in toxicology research. This group of tests covers physical-chemical properties.
