OECD TG 219 Testing of Chemicals - Sediment-Water Chironomid Toxicity Test Using Spiked Water

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of OECD TG 219 testing. This test guide is designed to evaluate the effects of prolonged exposure to chemicals on sediment-dwelling larvae of the freshwater dipteran Chironomus sp.

OECD TG 219 Testing of Chemicals - Sediment-Water Chironomid Toxicity Test Using Spiked Water

Early-stage chironomid larvae are exposed to at least five concentrations of the test chemical in sediment-water systems. The test begins by placing the first instar larvae in test beakers containing the sediment-water system and then adding the test substance to the water. At the end of the test, the rate of emergence and development of the chironomid is measured.

The maximum exposure time is 28 days for C. riparius, C. yoshimatsui and 65 days for C. tentans. Larval survival and weight can also be measured after 10 days if necessary (using additional replicates as appropriate). The study report should include development time and total number of fully emerged midges (sex and number recorded daily), observation of any abnormal behavior, number of visible pupae that did not appear, and any accumulation of egg mass.

The OECD guidelines for testing chemicals are a collection of approximately 150 of the most relevant internationally recognized test methods used by government, industry and independent laboratories to identify and characterize the potential hazards of chemicals.

They are a set of tools for professionals used primarily in regulatory safety testing and then in chemical and chemical product declaration, chemical registration and chemical evaluation. They can also be used to select and rank candidate chemicals during the development of new chemicals and products and in toxicology research. This group of tests covers physical-chemical properties.
