EN ISO 1833-17 Textiles - Quantitative Chemical Analysis - Part 17: Blends of Cellulose Fibers and Certain Fibers with Chloro Fibers and Other Specific Fibers

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 1833-17 testing. This standard specifies a method using concentrated sulfuric acid for the determination of the mass percentage of chlorofibres and certain other fibres, after removal of the non-fibrous material, in textiles made from mixtures of:

EN ISO 1833-17 Textiles - Quantitative Chemical Analysis - Part 17: Blends of Cellulose Fibers and Certain Fibers with Chloro Fibers and Other Specific Fibers

Two-component chloro fibers (based on vinyl chloride homopolymers), polypropylene, elastolefin, melamine and polypropylene/polyamide, together with cotton, viscose, cupro, modal, lyocell, acetate, triacetate, polyamide, polyester, elastomultiester, some acrylic and some modacrylic fibers.

Related modacrylics are those that give a clear solution when dipped in concentrated sulfuric acid. This method can be used, especially in place of the methods described in EN ISO 1833-12 and EN ISO 1833-13, in all cases where a preliminary test shows that the chlorine fibers are not completely dissolved neither in dimethylformamide nor in an azeotropic carbon disulfide mixture.

The component other than the chlorine fiber is dissolved with concentrated sulfuric acid from a known dry mass of the mixture. The chlorofiber residue is collected, washed, dried and weighed; the corrected mass if necessary, expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture. The percentage of the second component is derived from the difference.

Prepare this reagent by carefully adding 400 ml of sulfuric acid to 500 ml of distilled water while cooling. After cooling this solution to room temperature, dilute the solution to 1 liter with water.
