ISO 3451-4 Plastics - Determination of Ash - Part 4: Standard Test for Polyamides

This part of ISO 3451 covers methods for the determination of both filled and unfilled polyamide ash. The general procedures given in ISO 3451-1 are followed. For unfilled materials, method A or method C of ISO 3451-1 is used. Method A of ISO 3451-1 is used for filled and glass fiber reinforced materials.

For glass fiber filled materials containing flame retardant, antimony trioxide or other volatile additives such as the pigment zinc sulfide, a modification is included to remove them as volatile bromine components.

If the material contains metal halides or metals (especially in the presence of halogenated material) that tend to evaporate during the combustion of organic matter, calcination after sulfation can be applied (ISO 3451-1, method C). This procedure is accomplished by heating the organic matter together with concentrated sulfuric acid to a temperature at which evaporation and subsequent combustion of the organic matter occurs, and finally treating the residue at an elevated temperature until constant mass is reached.

The precision of the direct calcination of glass fiber-containing materials and the DBB method is unknown due to the lack of interlaboratory data. However, it is expected that the precision of these methods will not deviate significantly from the known data.
