AOAC 955.14 Testing of Disinfectants Against Salmonella choleraesuis

Over its numerous revisions, it has become the standard for the evaluation of liquid and dilutable liquid disinfectants for hard surfaces.

The use dilution method is accomplished by briefly immersing the stainless steel carriers in bacteria, treating them with disinfectant, and finally placing the carriers in growth water to determine if there are still surviving bacteria. This makes the method a qualitative method, meaning that results are determined by whether bacteria are growing rather than counting bacteria.

One of the most recent revisions of the method, the result of several years of work by industry members and the EPA, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is to lower the performance standard and make the test pass/fail detection more reliable. This also had the advantage of making it easier to pass the test to the liking of disinfectant developers.
