This standard specifies a method using a mixture of formic acid and zinc chloride to determine the mass percentage of viscose, certain types of copper, modal or lyocell, after removal of the non-fibrous material, in textiles made from blends of certain types of viscose.
This standard was originally created specifically for blends of viscose, certain types of cupro, modal or lyocell and cotton, but also applies to blends containing polypropylene, elastolefin and melamine. The method is not applicable to blends where cotton is subject to extensive chemical degradation. Not applicable if viscose, copper, modal or lyocell fiber becomes completely insoluble due to the presence of some permanent finishes or reactive dyes that cannot be removed completely.
Viscose, cupro, modal or lyocell fiber is dissolved from a known dry mass of the mixture with a reagent consisting of formic acid and zinc chloride. The residue is collected, washed, dried and weighed; Its adjusted mass is expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture. Viscose, cupro, modal or lyocell is found with a difference in fiber percentage.
