ISO 6964 Polyolefin Pipes and Fittings - Determination of Carbon Black Content by Calcination and Pyrolysis - Test Method

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 6964 testing. The ISO 6964 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), defines test methods for determining the carbon black content of polyolefin compounds used in the production of pipes and fittings, and provides a basic specification for polyethylene pipes and fittings. This standard applies equally to the material of manufacture and any material taken from a pipe or fitting.

In the last update of this standard, conventional and microwave oven test methods and the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) test method were added to the test methods.

The test methods offered under the ISO 6964 standard are:

  • Method A: Electric tube furnace;
  • Method B: Muffle furnace (B1 conventional or B2 microwave);
  • Method C: Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA).

Polyolefins are macromolecules formed by the polymerization of olefin monomer units. The most common polyolefins are polypropylene and polyethylene. Polyolefin pipelines are used around the world for water and gas distribution, sewage and wastewater disposal. In industrial and mining applications, polypropylene and polyethylene pipelines are replacing metallic systems due to their superior resistance to corrosion, abrasion and chemical attack.

Polypropylene and polyethylene pipelines for buried water and gas distribution systems are designed to operate at 20 degrees Celsius, but these pipelines can also operate at higher temperatures. In this regard, ISO 4427 and DIN 8077 standards are complied with. However, these standards cover a wide range of materials and tend to be conservative. In tests of materials manufactured today, it has been determined that they perform significantly better.

Polyolefin materials have an outstanding wear resistance compared to other pipe materials. Compared with steel, the wear rate of polypropylene is 4-6 times lower, so polypropylene pipes have replaced metal pipes for mine tailings lines.
