ISO 9648 Standard Test for Determination of Sorghum Tannin Content

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of ISO 9648 testing. ISO 9648 is an International Standard that provides guidelines for determining the tannin content in sorghum. Tannins are polyphenolic compounds found in a variety of plant materials, including sorghum, and measuring their content is important for a variety of purposes, such as assessing nutritional quality, animal feed quality, and food processing.

The method consists of extraction by shaking with dimethylformamide, then, after centrifugation, adding ferric ammonium citrate and ammonia to a portion of the supernatant liquid and determining the absorbance of the solution thus obtained spectrometrically at 525 nm.

Tannin content is determined spectrophotometrically at a specific wavelength, usually 280 nm, using a reference standard. This measures the absorbance of tannin compounds in the extract.

The standard provides guidelines for reporting tannin content in sorghum, typically in milligrams of tannic acid equivalent per gram of sample.
