The procedure in accordance with ISO 21438-3 [6] replaces NIOSH 7903 [8] for the determination of particulate fluorides and gaseous HF in workplace air samples.

The advantages of this method are that it can allow collection of the respirable fraction of particulate fluorides through the prefilter (housed in an optional respirable sampler) and provide lower detection and quantification for gaseous HF.

Sampling is performed at normal flow rates for individual sampling pumps of 1-2 liters per minute. The alkali-impregnated filter is used for the collection of gaseous HF, while it is for the collection of particulate fluorides.

Analysis of sample extracts is performed by ion chromatography (IC) after ultrasonic extraction of fluoride from each filter using basic (high pH) aqueous buffer solutions.
