OECD 114 OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals, Standard Test for Viscosity of Liquids

This test guide describes methods for measuring the viscosity of liquids. Most of the listed methods are suitable for the investigation of Newtonian fluids. Measurement of non-Newtonian fluids is possible with rotational viscometer.

Viscosity measurements are carried out according to five methods:

• Capillary viscometer;
• Flow vessel;
• rotary viscometer;
• Rolling ball viscometer;
• Draw ball viscometer.

Each viscosity determination should be made at 20°C and 40°C. At least two determinations should be made at each temperature. Viscosity measurement will be made in capillary and forced ball viscometers according to the standards. In the case of rotary viscometers, the viscosity specification is only suitable for Newtonian fluids.
