EN 15169 Characterization of Waste - Standard Test for Determination of Ignition Loss in Waste - Sludge and Sediment

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 15169 testing. This European standard specifies a method for the determination of ignition loss. This procedure applies to all kinds of waste, sludge and sediments.

EN 15169 Characterization of Waste - Standard Test for Determination of Ignition Loss in Waste - Sludge and Sediment

Ignition loss is often used as an estimate for the content of non-volatile organic matter in waste, sludge and sediments. It should be noted that any elemental carbon content and evaporation of organic substances or chemical reactions by inorganic compounds are included in the ignition loss.

A test portion is heated to (550 ± 25)°C in an oven. The mass difference before and after heating is used to calculate the ignition loss. The determination is made on a pre-dried sample in accordance with EN 14346 or directly on the uncured sample, including a drying step, or with reference to dry matter.

Since ignition loss is an empirical parameter, there is no intervention based on determination in principle. However, for many purposes the determination is used to evaluate the organic matter content in samples of waste, sludge or sediment. It should be noted that any elemental carbon in the sample will be included in the ignition loss value. Also, evaporation or chemical reactions of inorganic compounds will be included in the loss of ignition value.

Samples should be stored in tight containers when not analyzed immediately. Special protection may not be required for biologically inactive samples. Biologically active samples may need their caps loosened to prevent gas pressure from building up.

Determination of ignition loss and determination of dry matter are performed as separate operations on different portions of the same sample. However, for some materials it is appropriate to perform the determination of both the dry residue and the ignition loss in successive treatments in the same ladle.
