ISO 18894 specifies equipment and techniques used to determine the reactivity of particulate coke (nominal peak size >20 mm) in carbon dioxide gas at elevated temperatures and its strength after reaction by rolling in a cylindrical chamber in carbon dioxide gas.

The main application is testing coke to be used in iron making blast furnaces (CRI~ 55). This standard can also be applied to other types of coke (eg cast coke), but limited certainty can be expected. The application of coke for non-ferrous blast furnaces is beyond the scope of this document.

A test portion of the dried coke sample with a size range of 19,0 mm to 22,4 mm is heated to 1100°C in a reaction vessel under a nitrogen atmosphere. For the test, the atmosphere is converted to carbon dioxide for exactly 2 hours. After testing, the reaction vessel is allowed to cool to approximately 50°C in a nitrogen atmosphere. Comparing the sample weight before and after the reaction determines the coke reactivity index (CRI).

The reacted coke is processed in a specially designed drum at 600 revolutions for 30 minutes. The post-reaction coke strength (CSR) value is determined by sieving and weighing the amount of coke that has passed through a 10,0 mm or 9,5 mm sieve.

Both perforated plates are fixed between two sets of handles on the reaction vessel. The gas enters through the inlets in the bottom and exits through the outlets in the upper part of the reaction vessel. The reaction vessel is positioned so that the coke sample contained in the vessel is in the center of the uniform temperature zone of the furnace.
