DIN 54232 Textile - Determination of Content of Chlorobenzene and Chlorotoluene Based Bonds

DIN 54232, a German standard, provides a test method for determining the content of chlorobenzene and chlorotoluene-based bonds in various textile products. For example, this analysis method is used to determine the chlorotoluene and chlorobenzene content in textile products and components such as top fabric, linings, laid fabrics, zippers, buttons, labels, threads and appliqués.

The sample, which is broken into small pieces during the test, is extracted in an ultrasonic bath with dichloromethane in a closed container, the extract is purified from disturbing particles and fibers with membrane filters and is analyzed without additional cleaning with a gas chromatograph connected to a mass selective detector in the selected ion mode.

Chlororganic carriers are a group of chemicals typically made up of various chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes used as intermediates in the synthesis of other chemicals. These compounds are used as an auxiliary and leveling agent and as a dye carrier, especially in the dyeing of polyesters with disperse dyes. Both of these are present as impurities in chemical formulations of dyestuffs and solvents.

Chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes have various applications in various industries. It is widely used in clothing and footwear supply chains in the textile industry. Chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes are used as carriers during the dyeing process of synthetic fibers, especially for polyester and polyester blends.

Chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes are also used as intermediates in the synthesis of other chemicals and also as solvents for dyestuffs. Certain chlorobenzenes are used to make deodorizers or degreasers for metal, leather and wool.

Regulations in major markets around the world restrict the presence of chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes in finished products. There is no European Union legal requirement to ban these substances in textile products, but it has become a market-accepted requirement for textile companies.

Leading clothing and footwear companies do not use chlorobenzene and chlorotoluene in the production of their products. Some chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes are very toxic to aquatic organisms at certain concentrations. It also has the potential to bioaccumulate and bioconcentrate. Long-term exposure to some chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes above certain concentration levels causes the development of some types of cancer. Also, above certain concentration levels, some chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes are toxic by inhalation or skin contact.

Polyester and polyester blended textiles attract particular attention. Chlororganic carriers are frequently used in the dyeing process of these materials. When purchasing materials from suppliers, manufacturers conduct risk-based tests to ensure that the required limits are met, and they want to ensure that all suppliers have a robust chemical management system.
