The protein fiber is dissolved from a known dry mass of the mixture with alkaline hypochlorite. Sidue is collected, washed, dried and weighed; the corrected mass if necessary, expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture. Protein is found by difference in fiber percentage.

Lithium hypochlorite or sodium hypochlorite can be used to prepare the hypochlorite solution. Lithium hypochlorite is recommended in situations involving a small number of analyzes or for analyzes at relatively long intervals. This is because the percentage of hypochlorite in solid lithium hypochlorite is almost constant, unlike in sodium hypochlorite. If the percentage of hypochlorite is known, it is not necessary to check the hypochlorite content iodometrically for each analysis, as a fixed weighed portion of lithium hypochlorite can be used.
