EN ISO 1833-7 specifies a method using formic acid to determine the mass percent of polyamide fiber after removal of the non-fibrous material in textiles made from blends of:
Cotton, viscose, cupro, modal, lyocell, polyester, polypropylene, chlorofibre, acrylic, fiberglass, elastomultiester, elastolefin and melamine or wool (if the wool content is less than or equal to 25%) with polyamide or animal hair fibers.
The polyamide is dissolved from a known dry mass of the mixture with aqueous formic acid. The residue is collected, washed, dried and weighed; is expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture, corrected if necessary. It is found by the difference in polyamide fiber percentage.
Strain the contents of the bottle through a weighed filter crucible and transfer the remaining fibers into the crucible by washing the bottle with a little more formic acid. Empty the crucible and wash the sediment in the filter repeatedly with formic acid, hot water, dilute ammonia solution, and finally cold water, and empty the crucible using vacuum after each addition. Do not apply suction until each washer fluid is drained under gravity.
