ISO 10634 Water Quality - Evaluation of Biodegradability of Slightly Water-Soluble Organic Compounds in an Aqueous Environment

This standard covers techniques for preparing poorly water-soluble organic compounds (i.e., liquid and solid compounds) with a water solubility of less than approximately 100 mg/1 and placing them in test vessels for subsequent biodegradation testing in an aqueous environment using standard methods.

Subsequent tests for biodegradability are primarily methods using the analysis of released carbon dioxide described in ISO 9439 and the determination of oxygen described in ISO 9408 and following the usual precautions for ISO 10707. Therefore, it can be noticed that there are methods to measure removal. The use of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is not suitable.

This standard does not specify biodegradation test methods. It is limited to describing techniques for introducing test compounds into the test medium and maintaining them in a dispersed state. These techniques are applied while observing experimental conditions described in standardized methods for assessing biodegradability. ISO 2, which is based on CO9439 evolution, is not suitable for testing volatile compounds.

Some of the preparation methods described in this standard may not be acceptable to regulators to conclude on the readily biodegradability of the tested compounds.
