The method uses a capillary column with or without an additional flame ionization detector (FID) and sorbent sampling tubes with subsequent thermal desorption (TD) and gas chromatographic (GC) analysis using a mass spectrometric (MS) detector.

The method is applicable to the measurement of most GC compatible vapor phase organic compounds at concentrations ranging from micrograms per cubic meter to several milligrams per cubic metre. Depending on the sorbents used, many very volatile organic compounds (WVOC) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) can be analyzed.

This standard is applicable to measurements in product emission test rooms as well as vapor-phase organic compounds in indoor environments involving buildings of different designs and purposes and cabinets for different modes of transport. These measurements can be for a number of purposes as described in ISO 16000-1 and ISO 16000-5, so the measurement requirement may be well defined by the task descriptor or it may be quite obvious.

As many or as many identified substances as possible should be calibrated using original reference compounds. Standards should be set at the sampling end of conditioned sorbent tubes using liquid or gas phase standards.
