ISO 21068-3 specifies methods for the determination of total nitrogen and nitrogen calculated as silicon nitride, total oxygen, and free metallic and oxidic components in silicon carbide raw materials and refractory products.
This part of ISO 21068 represents a list of analytical methods approximately structured by material composition. However, it is still the user who must prove the applicability of the method, depending on the material and analytical requirements.
A sample is decomposed with sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid in a pressurization vessel so that the silicon nitride is converted to the ammonium salt, and boric acid is then added to it. The final solution is transferred to a distillation flask. Sodium hydroxide is added to the flask and steam distilled, and the ammonia distillate is absorbed into a suitable amidosulfonic acid. The remaining amidosulfonic acid is titrated with sodium hydroxide.
