ISO 3451-3 Plastics - Determination of Ash - Part 3: Standard Test for Unplasticized Cellulose Acetate

This standard specifies a method for the determination of unplasticized cellulose acetate ash, free of additives, fillers, dyes or other materials that may affect the result.

The ash content at 575 ± 25°C is a reasonable measure of mineral salts and inorganic impurities in cellulose acetate. The weight of the ash obtained varies according to the ignition temperature. Higher temperatures, such as 850°C, will convert calcium carbonate and other carbonates to oxides, thus giving lower values ​​for ash. The composition of the ash can vary with the pulping process used in manufacture, limiting the importance of ash determination in absolute terms.

Fill the crucible halfway with the test portion from the weigh bottle. Heat the crucible directly on the heating device to slow sample combustion and prevent ash loss. Let it cool down and add another piece of the test portion. Repeat this process until the total amount of the test portion is consumed.

Make two determinations. Calculate the arithmetic mean of the results. If single test results differ by more than 10% of their mean, repeat the procedure until two consecutive results differ by no more than 10% of their mean.
