Organotin Analysis

Organotin compounds (organotins) are substances consisting of tin directly attached to different organic groups. In general, these compounds have the most applications in the clothing and footwear industries.

Organotin Analysis

The main uses of organotins are:

  • As a heat stabilizer in polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • As a catalyst in the production of polymeric materials such as polyurethane coated fabrics
  • In plastisol prints, rubber, adhesives and similar textiles
  • On leathers and synthetic leathers such as polyurethane
  • As biocides or preservatives in pesticides

Silicone-based lacquers may contain organotins, for example, for elastomeric properties and water repellency. The most common application in clothing and footwear supply chains is plastic coatings, screen printing and polyurethane coated fabrics.

However, regulations enacted in major markets around the world restrict the presence of organotins in finished products. Some organotins are classified as persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic, very persistent and very bioaccumulative. Some organotins are considered toxic to aquatic life. Some organotins impair the immune system. Some organotin compounds are endocrine disruptors and cause reproductive toxicity. In this regard, before supplying any formulation, necessary tests should be performed to ensure that appropriate protective equipment, chemical storage facilities, facility engineering controls, and related treatment/disposal facilities are suitable for chemicals.

In various industries, different substances are today recognized as examples of safer alternatives. For example, calcium-zinc stabilizers are used in the form of metal carboxylates. These stabilizers are suitable for products with a high degree of clarity, good mechanical properties, excellent organoleptic properties and good weather resistance. Organic-based stabilizers are calcium-zinc stabilizers in which zinc is almost or completely replaced by organic stabilizers. The benefits of these stabilizers include low migration, low odour, low volatile organic compound emissions, good initial color and excellent transparency. Bismuth, titanate, titanium and zirconium catalysts are used for the production of polyurethane.

In short, organotins are a broad class of chemicals. The most toxic forms have three tin-carbon bonds and are widely used as a biocide and pesticide. Concerns are growing about organotins with one or two tin-carbon bonds. Their widespread use in PVC and other plastics causes constant exposure of humans.

Our organization also provides organotine analysis services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
