ISO 11290-1 specifies a horizontal method for the detection of L. monocytogenes and the detection of Listeria spp. It applies to products intended for human consumption and animal nutrition, and to environmental examples in the field of food production and food processing.
Due to the wide variety of food and feed products, this horizontal method may not be suitable in every detail for some products where different or specific methods may be required. However, in any case, this horizontal method is intended to be applied as far as possible, and deviations from it can only be made for justified technical reasons.
The next time this standard is reviewed, all available information regarding the extent to which this horizontal method has been followed and, in the case of certain products, the reasons for deviations from it will be taken into account.
Harmonization of test methods cannot be immediate and International or national standards may already exist for certain product groups that are not compatible with this horizontal method. When such standards are reviewed, it is hoped that they will be modified to conform to this standard, so that in the end the only difference remaining from this horizontal method will be those required for well-known technical reasons.
Listeria spp can be found in small numbers and is often accompanied by much larger numbers of other microorganisms, so selective enrichment is required. It is also necessary to detect injured and stressed Listeria spp., and primary selective enrichment medium with reduced inhibitor concentration fulfills at least some of this function.
