OECD 309 Aerobic Mineralization in Surface Waters - Simulation Standard Test for Biodegradation

The main purpose of OECD 309 is to measure the mineralization (biodegradation) of a low concentration organic test substance in aerobic natural surface water (fresh, brackish or marine). A laboratory shake flask test to determine the aerobic biodegradation rates of a product. An optional secondary objective is to obtain information on the primary degradation of the product and the formation of transformation products.

During OECD 309, the test substance is incubated with either surface water only (pelagic test) or turbid surface water containing suspended solids/sediment (suspended sediment test). Samples are incubated in the dark at a controlled temperature under aerobic conditions and shaking. Distortion is measured at various time points. The duration of the test is usually up to 60 days.

Information on the biodegradability of the test substance at higher concentrations, abiotic degradability, transformation products, and relevant physico-chemical properties should be available prior to testing to assist in establishing experimental planning and interpreting results.
