DIN 53236 Measurement and Evaluation Conditions for Determining Color Differences for Coloring Agents - Paint Coatings - Similar Coatings and Plastics

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of DIN 53236 testing. This standard covers the measurement and evaluation conditions for the determination of color differences in paint, varnish and similar coatings and plastics. The methods are particularly applicable to the identification and evaluation of color change that occurs when pigmented and non-pigmented materials and materials dyed with soluble coloring agents are subjected to physical or chemical stress.

DIN 53236 Measurement and Evaluation Conditions for Determining Color Differences for Coloring Agents - Paint Coatings - Similar Coatings and Plastics

According to the information in Chapter 1, the standard applies not only to pigmented but also to non-pigmented systems. In the case of fluorescent samples, different results can be obtained with different colorimeters due to the different excitation of fluorescence. For comparison, it is recommended to measure such samples with the same type of colorimeter with the same light source and polychromatic illumination, although poorer reproducibility can be expected here than with non-fluorescent samples. The light source and type of light should be specified in the test report.

The perceived color of an object is a combination of surface reflection and radiating reflection from the volume. When samples are subjected to stress, both the inside of the sample and the surface of the sample can change. Both changes often contribute to the perceived difference in visual color impression.

Any pretreatment that may be required (eg washing, polishing, overpainting) and placement of clear or translucent specimens with a substrate should be agreed upon and specified in the test report.

Detection of color differences between sample and reference due to color differences caused by colorants. Differences in the surface quality of the sample usually do not affect the measurement result with this method. (This measurement condition corresponds to the requirements for quality control of pigments.)
