DIN 54003 Testing Color Fastness of Textiles - Determination of Color Fastness of Dyes and Prints in Daylight

Color Fastness can be defined in several ways. First, in the normal use of dyed textiles, a fabric can retain its original dye color under the influence of various external factors. Another definition relates to the resistance of the color of a dyed or printed textile product to fading or flowing under different kinds of influences, including water, light, friction, washing and perspiration.

Color Fastness after exposure to light is measured using a sample of the fabric to be tested. A sample and a string of eight blue wool standards are simultaneously exposed to artificial light in a device equipped with a xenon arc damping lamp, controlling humidity in the device.

• Other factors affecting color fastness include whether the fibers are dyed before weaving or knitting, or whether the finished fabric is dyed in the vat;
• Laundry chemicals used during cleaning, including detergents, stain removers or bleach;
• The temperature of the water used for washing (higher temperatures may cause problems for some garments);
• pH of various substances (sweat, detergents or skin creams) interacting with the fabric;
• Whether the fabric has been exposed to high drying temperatures.
