This method is not suitable for use with conventional explosives such as gunpowder and dynamite, substances that do not require oxygen for combustion, pyrophoric substances or, in some cases, substances or mixtures of substances that may behave similarly. This standard specifies a method for experimentally determining the maximum burst pressure of dust clouds. The maximum explosion pressure is the maximum value of the excess pressure during explosions of explosive atmospheres in the explosion range of a combustible powder in a closed container. Measuring the maximum burst pressure is the basis for explosion protection by the design and construction of equipment, protective systems and components to reduce explosion effects.
Whenever possible, electrical or mechanical breakers should be fitted to the apparatus to ensure that all openings in the chamber (e.g. main door, instrument entrances, entrance or exit) are properly closed before a test procedure is started.
The apparatus should also be equipped as much as possible to allow any residual pressure within the vessel to be vented before the vessel is opened.
