EN ISO 12219-3 Interior Air of Road Vehicles - Part 3: Screening Method for Determination of Emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds from Vehicle Interior Components and Materials

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 12219-3 testing. EN ISO 12219-3 specifies a rapid, qualitative and semi-quantitative screening method for vapor-phase organic compounds (volatile and some semi-volatile) released from vehicle wrap materials under simulated real-use conditions using microscale test chambers. This method aims to evaluate new car interior components, but can in principle be applied to used car components as well.

Target analytes include VOCs (conventionally defined as organic compounds in the volatility range of n-hexane to n-hexadecane) and volatile carbonyl compounds such as formaldehyde. The analytical procedure specified for VOCs is ISO 16000‑6 and for formaldehyde and some other light carbonyl compounds it is ISO 16000‑3.

EN ISO 12219-3 provides third-party testing labs and the manufacturing industry a cost-effective approach to:

  • Monitoring and screening of VOC emissions as part of routine quality control;
  • Monitoring product uniformity or conformity between official certification tests;
  • Comparison of emissions from products in a range (for example, different colors or patterns);
  • Evaluation of prototypes, "low-emission" materials or products during development.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are widely used in industry and can be emitted by many everyday products and materials. They have attracted attention in recent years due to their effects on indoor air quality. People spend a lot of time in their cars after home and work. It is important to identify the material emissions of internal parts and, if necessary, reduce them to an acceptable level. For this reason, it is necessary to obtain comprehensive and reliable information about the types and concentrations of organic compounds in the interior air of vehicles.
