Cyclohexanone Analysis

Cyclohexanone is an organic solvent, a pale yellow liquid with a pleasant odour. This compound, which has an odor reminiscent of peppermint and acetone oil, has a flash point of 45 degrees and cyclohexanone is a flammable product with a boiling range of 153-158 degrees. Cyclohexanone is less dense than water.

Cyclohexanone has good solubility in both hydrocarbons and chemical solvents. It mixes very well and is miscible in most organic solvents. However, it is slightly soluble in water.

Cyclohexanone is an important chemical solvent used in various industries, particularly the dye and printing industry. Cyclohexanone is also a key ingredient in the manufacture of herbicides (medicines used to control unwanted plants) and an important catalyst for polyester and synthetic resins. It is also an important additive to prevent browning in lacquers and paints and as a solvent for PVC printing inks.

Care should be taken when using cyclohexanone as it is a dangerous product. Repeated exposure or skin contact with cyclohexanone will cause dermatitis and inhalation of the product will cause irritation of the respiratory system. People with sensitive skin should use chemical resistant gloves.

Cyclohexanone must be protected against physical damage. It should also be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from any fire hazard area. Especially in non-smoking areas. Outdoor or detached storage is preferred. Containers must be connected and grounded for transfers to avoid static sparks.

The allowable exposure limit for cyclohexanone is set at 300 ppm by the American Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A ventilation system must be installed to keep worker exposures below airborne exposure limits. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred as it can control the emissions of the pollutant at the source and prevent it from spreading to the general work area.
