EN ISO 11733 Water Quality - Elimination of Organic Compounds in Aqueous Environment - Activated Sludge Simulation Test

The conditions described simulate a wastewater treatment plant. Two test systems can be used: activated sludge plants or porous vessels. Tests can optionally be carried out under conditions of nitrification and denitrification and connection of the units.

The method is applied to the following organic compounds under test conditions:

• It is soluble in tap water at the test concentration and is not expected to convert to insoluble metabolites if biodegradation in addition to elimination is determined;
• Slightly soluble in water, but satisfactorily dispersible in water, allowing detection by appropriate analytical tools (e.g. organic) carbon measurements;
• Non-volatile or having a negligible vapor pressure under test conditions;
• Not inhibitory to the test microorganisms at the concentration selected for testing.

Compounds that are inhibitory at the concentrations used in this test may be tested at concentrations lower than their EC20 values, followed by higher practical concentrations after a period of acclimatization.

The method can also be used to measure the biodegradation and elimination of dissolved organic compounds (also called "test compound" in the method) in wastewater.
