EN ISO 1833-25 Textile - Quantitative Chemical Analysis - Part 25: Standard Test for Blends of Polyester with Other Specific Fibers

This standard specifies a method using trichloroacetic acid and chloroform to determine the mass percent of polyester fibers after removal of the non-fibrous material in textiles made from mixtures of:

Aramid fibers (except polyamide imide), flame retardant (FR) viscose and polyacrylate in combination with polyester fibers.

Chloroform is said to be harmful to operators. Safety will be assured by strictly operating according to safety regulations or precautions. However, alternative methods for dissolving polyester are included in the Bibliography.

The polyester fiber is dissolved from a known dry mass of the mixture with a reagent consisting of trichloroacetic acid and chloroform. The residue is collected, washed, dried and weighed; the corrected mass if necessary, expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture. The percentage of polyester is found by the difference.

It is preferable to use the manual separation method whenever possible, as it generally gives more accurate results than the chemical method. For example, in the case of yarns consisting of several elements, each consisting of only one type of fiber, or woven fabrics in which fiber to fiber, the component fibers can be used for all textiles that do not form a close blend.
