Sodium lauryl ether sulfate, shortly known as SLES, is an anionic detergent and surfactant contained in soap, shampoo, toothpaste and many other personal care products. This compound is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent. Sodium ammonium lauryl sulfate, also known as SLS, is also a surfactant used in many cosmetic products due to its cleaning and emulsifying properties. This compound is derived from palm kernel oil or coconut oil.

Essentially, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a chemical used for cleaning and helps soaps foam. It has been used as a shampoo ingredient as an alternative to soap since the early 1930s. It is an effective foaming agent that provides plenty of bubble and cleansing power. For this reason, it is used almost everywhere, from floor cleaners to shampoos.

Consumers are genuinely concerned about avoiding this compound. But despite so many claims, there is no evidence that small amounts of sodium lauryl sulfate cause long-term health problems, including cancer. However, it is considered to be irritating to the skin and eyes, so people with eczema, psoriasis or sensitive skin are advised to avoid it.

Sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) is the same chemical compound as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). However, it went through an extra ethoxylation step. Because of this extra step, SLES sometimes carries traces of a compound called 1.4-dioxane. However, the amount of 1,4-dioxane in a health and beauty product is very small and does not pose any risk. Still, some people prefer to avoid SLES just in case.

Consumers must check their ingredient ingredients to make sure products do not contain SLS or SLES. Today, SLS / SLES-free personal care and cosmetic products are produced by the manufacturers.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), found in products that consumers use to clean their skin, teeth and clothing, are just one of the few ingredients added to many everyday products.
