DIN 53479 Plastics and Elastomers - Density Determination Test

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of DIN 53479 test. Methods according to this standard are used to determine the density of plastics, elastomers and products made from them; However, foam materials are excluded.

DIN 53479 Plastics and Elastomers - Density Determination Test

Density is a rapidly determined property that can be used to detect physical or chemical changes in plastics and elastomers. Determining density is often done to monitor the production and processing of plastics and elastomers.

The choice of one of the methods listed below to determine density depends on the type of material, the shape and size of the sample and the required repeatability and comparability of the results in accordance with DIN 51848 Part 1.

Procedure A
Determination of density using the flotation method Application examples: Semi-finished products and finished parts (e.g. sheets, rods, pipes, etc.)

Procedure B
Determination of density with pycnometer Application examples: Molding compounds (granules and powders).

Procedure C
Determination of density using the flotation method Application examples: semi-finished products, finished parts and granules.

Procedure D
Determination of density using the density gradient method Application examples: semi-finished products, finished parts and granules.

Samples are taken from semi-finished and finished parts. There is no change in density caused by compressive stresses in the samples. The surfaces of the samples should be smooth and void-free to prevent air bubbles from adhering to the samples during immersion in the test liquid. For processes C and D, molding compounds in granular form are measured in the delivery state. To determine density according to Method D, the dimensions of the samples must be selected to ensure an accurate height measurement of the center of the volume.
